Cyber Security Awareness.

Technical Project Manager David Andrew, shares his valuable tips for remaining safe in a digital world.

As we delve into Cyber Security Awareness Month it’s crucial to reflect on the dramatic transformation our world has undergone. The internet, once a novelty, has now become an integral part of our daily lives. However, as with any significant shift, there are challenges and risks, especially in the realm of personal cybersecurity. In this article, we’ll explore the essence of being a modern human being in the digital age and how we can embrace it with confidence.

Much like a time traveler from the medieval era would find today’s bustling cities perplexing and chaotic, many of us may feel overwhelmed by the complexities of our online existence. From cyber threats to data breaches, the digital landscape can appear daunting. But fear not; just as the modern city operates with order and safety, so can your online life.

By understanding and adhering to a few straightforward principles, you can protect yourself and minimise the potential impact of cybersecurity threats. Much like how we were taught to look both ways before crossing the road, and the importance of good tyres for a smooth drive, you too can navigate the digital world safely.

So, what are these essential rules of cyber security, and where can you learn more?

The first stop and a valuable resource is https://Cyber.gov.au

Step 1: Self-Assessment with cyber.gov.au

Start by assessing your own cyber awareness. Cyber.gov.au offers a helpful quiz called the “How Secure Quiz.” It’s a great way to gauge your current level of cyber awareness and identify areas for improvement.

Step 2: Automatic Updates

Always enable automatic updates on ALL your devices and applications. These updates patch known bugs and security flaws. Remember, cybercriminals are already aware of these vulnerabilities. Stay one step ahead by keeping your software and devices up to date.

Step 3: Passwords and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Take control of your online security by following these steps:

Check the security of your email and passwords at https://haveibeenpwned.com.au.

Use a reliable password manager, from a reputable vendor, like Apple KeyVault, 1Password, Dashlane, or Microsoft Authenticator.  Use this to set unique and strong passwords for all your accounts.

Choose the option for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) whenever possible. Google and Microsoft Authenticator are excellent choices, but email and text messages are better than nothing.

Step 4: Backups

Imagine losing all your valuable data – records, photos, and those funny GIFs you cherish. To prevent this digital nightmare, make backups a regular part of your routine:

Consider automated backups to cloud storage services like OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox, directly from your computer or mobile device.

Alternatively, manually copy your data to an external drive, which can be easily obtained from your local computer store.

In conclusion, It’s important to acknowledge that the digital age is here to stay. By following these simple guidelines and continuously educating ourselves, we can confidently navigate the digital landscape, ensuring our online experiences are both enriching and secure.
