Colony 47 Case Study

How using a popular child’s toy can be used to develop team strategies

Colony 47 engaged 2PM Services to facilitate a LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY™ (LSP) workshop to develop more effective team strategies for their Youth Solutions division. Their goal was to strengthen communications, improve client’s experience and enhance team leader cohesion.

Colony 47, an independent and proudly Tasmanian social enterprise, is committed to creating positive change in our community. By addressing the barriers to housing, education, and employment faced by people in Tasmania, the organisation strives to make a meaningful impact.

As part of its work, Colony 47’s Youth Solutions division also builds solutions with young people to achieve their goals and aspirations, through the involvement of families and communities.

Colony 47 is committed to ensuring that young people are supported to achieve their goals in life and is one of the largest providers of integrated youth services in Southern Tasmania.

The Challenge

Colony 47 engaged 2PM Services to develop guidelines to strengthen communication between Youth Solutions Initiatives to improve client experience.

2PM also sought to strengthen team leader cohesion by providing opportunities for deeper personal insights and awareness within the team.

The Solution

2PM Facilitator, Stephanie McKay, designed and facilitated a LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY™ workshop to develop an integrated approach with the Youth Services division. This workshop was specifically aimed at developing strategies to improve communication and to enhance team leader cohesion.

In the session, team leaders built Lego models to depict the ‘current state’ of their roles and teamwork dynamics. This provided clarity around the challenges that each team leader was facing.

The team then crafted a ‘future state’ vision, planning improved collaboration and identifying necessary systems and processes.

The outcomes

The team gained a deeper appreciation for each other’s roles and contributions to organisational success. Then, guidelines and action plans to improve communication between teams and initiatives were constructed.

To support these, the skills, resources, systems and processes to enable implementation were also developed.  This energetic and enthusiastic team even had time to build their shared mission statement!

They developed new initiatives, clarified future interactions, and established a shared commitment to achieving these outcomes.

The feeDback

I would definitely recommend Stephanie and this method of facilitation. The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY™ workshop brought the team together and put them on the same page, while having a bit of a laugh at the same time. We achieved a lot more in our workshop, than I thought we would. It’s a really great way of bringing a team together and getting a new mission forward.
